OUR HISTORY

CrossFit 1836 started long before we had a name and a building, or even an official affiliation. In 2006 we stumbled onto the magical website of CrossFit.com on our mission to find the best workout program available. Like the typical CrossFit story, it only took one WOD and we were hooked. We stopped our current gym memberships and started doing workouts with what little equipment we had because that is how CrossFit began, minimal equipment and a lot of sweat and hard work. We used any extra money we could come across and buy what we needed to add movements to our arsenal, we even recruited a couple of friends to come and give it a try.

After getting certified and  spending a couple of years training at another box and learning the ropes, it was finally time to make the big step of opening our own box and where better to do it than Kingwood, Texas where there was not another CrossFit Gym for miles. After much deliberation, we settled on the name CrossFit 1836 because there is nothing better than being from the great state of Texas. So with that, we became affiliated in September 2010 and found a 1,500 square foot space in a business park. The building was nothing but office spaces, so we had to completely renovate the space.

After all the dust settled, we opened the doors and began running classes. We started filling every square foot with people and sweat, even spilling onto the streets outside. Once that space ran out we took out even more office space utilizing every square foot possible for clients. When classes kept filling up we realized the place wasn’t going to get any bigger. Plus the landlord was getting a little tired of mobs of people running laps through their business park.

So with that, we set out to find the new home of CrossFit 1836. We were able to find a space that fit our needs and made the move to a 5,500 + square foot space. We have been growing ever since and have goals of adding more trainers and programs to help make the 1836 experience the best it can possibly be. We are relentless in our effort to improve and good will never be good enough.

My training partner Mat Koym and I did a set of overhead squats and quickly realized we had been wasting our time with our program. That was the last time we ever stepped foot in that gym and from that point on built a garage gym and started CrossFitting out of it, trying our hardest not to admit we were at buttercup status. I wanted to take my CF even further and forked over the money to travel to San Diego and get certified in Cali where…

…it all started. I came back to Houston where believe it or not there were only 4 boxes at the time.  I was lucky enough to walk through the doors at CrossFit Champions and convinced Matt and Pam Munson to take a chance on bringing me on as a trainer. Even though it was an hour drive each way I spent all my free time there integrating myself into an amazing community and getting demoralized by WODs daily. Finally came the time when I was ready to bring a gym and community like that to Kingwood where there were no CF gyms. Mat and I partnered up with the goal of making a gym people couldn’t live without.

Around 2006 Matthew Alexander introduced me to CrossFit at Vans Gym in Baytown TX. We did a small WOD with Over Head Squats and it crushed us!! Matthew went on to take a job at CrossFit Champions the next year. It took me a while to join a CrossFit gym because of the price. I’m cheap and wasn’t about to come off $100+ that easy. After all I had been lifting my whole life. I was good. Well I was wrong. Once I dropped into a class…

and got back into that athletic atmosphere. I was hooked. I actually liked that I was forced to run. “You may pass me on the run but let me get back to those weights!” Sign me up! A few months in I even ran a sub 8 minute mile. Huge for me at the time considering I couldn’t remember the last time I even ran!!

I haven’t stepped foot back into a “globo gym” since. After a few years in CrossFit, local competitions, and seeing just how great and helpful the CF community was. We decided to open our own box. After throwing ideas, names, and locations around for a couple years. We decide on Kingwood TX in 2010. The town I was first introduced to weightlifting at KMS in the sixth grade!

I joined CrossFit 1836 in January 2011 and successfully completed the CrossFit Level 1 Course in November 2011. Shortly after, I began aiding in coaching and taking over classes. CrossFit has given me the opportunity to make some amazing friendships and open the door to a whole new community. Short term/Long term I am looking to continue to pursue the sport of fitness and hopes to one day achieve my personal goal of…

making it to the CrossFit Regionals. As well, I am always looking to further my fitness education with additional trainings and seminars so I can continue to educate members on what is means to be fit!

I worked hard to get back in shape and started a Paleo based diet. I love how CrossFit has a schedule and a plan. I did the whole “Global Gym” thing and ended up paying for a 2 year contract, and could probably count on one hand how many times I actually went and worked out. I get to compete, coach and share my passion for CrossFit with others. I want to help people reach their goals by maximizing their potential.

This was the first time I had really gotten to spend some time in an actual CrossFit gym and I became very consistent with my training. I quickly realized I loved CrossFit and I especially loved weightlifting!
I have always been at the gym running classes when needed since I received my level 1 in 2010, in the beginning of 2013 I became a full time coach and enjoy every minute of it! It’s my life and wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else.

2008 – CrossFit Nutrition Certification
2010 – CrossFit Instructor Level I Certification
